David Gimelfarb Search Update

The Embassy of the United States has been cooperating with the authorities of the Government of Costa Rica and the Costa Rican Red Cross in the search for missing American citizen David Gimelfarb. Gimelfarb has been missing since August 11, 2009 when he went hiking in Rincon de la Vieja National Park.

At the request of the Department of State, the U. S. Southern Command deployed two Blackhawk helicopters to assist in the search for Mr. Gimelfarb. These helicopters and their crews are part of Joint Task Force Bravo Company based in Honduras. They arrived on August 19 and began a search and rescue operation on August 20. The search continued until August 22 and covered one hundred square kilometers of the region of the national park. On August 23, the two helicopters and their crews returned to their base in Honduras.

Our military did everything possible in supporting the efforts of the Costa Rican Red Cross, the National Police, park rangers and local guides. We regret that they were unable to find David Gimelfarb.

The U.S. Southern Command often provides humanitarian assistance to Central American countries as it did in January 2009, after the Cinchona earthquake in Costa Rica, when it sent helicopters to rescue victims who were trapped at the affected area.
