Sharing Best Practices in Keeping Meat Safe for Human Consumption
San Jose – January 14, 2010
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Costa Rica’s Ministry of Agriculture co-hosted a Latin America regional workshop January 11-14 on best practices in the regulation of veterinary drugs and the food derived from animals treated with such medicines.
The workshop, entitled, “The Safety of Drug Residues in Animals Destined for Human Consumption,” provided an opportunity for scientists and regulatory officials from the national governments of Central America and the Caribbean to work together to protect the public health. Led by personnel from FDA’s Latin America Regional Office/Center for Veterinary Medicine and the Agriculture Ministry’s, National Animal Health Services (SENASA), the event took place in San Jose and demonstrated the common value the U.S. and Costa Rica place on sharing the benefits of science in the protection of their citizens’ health.
